AWARDS FOR ALL
MEANS YOUR HOCKEY CLUB TOO
Information has been received to indicate that the East Awards for All ‘sports
pot’ still has about 46% of its allocation for 2001 - 2002 left (approximately
£400 000) with only two more Awards Panel Meetings this financial year. It was
also noted that hockey had on a comparative basis not had as many grants as
other sports, although a number of Clubs in
Cambridgeshire had been successful in the past – March Town, Newmarket and
Cambridge City.
The deadline for the last Panel Meetings of 2001 – 2002 is: 20th February 2002 for 13th March 2002
It is strongly recommended that Clubs take advantage of the opportunity presented by this situation and put in Awards for All bids (£500 - £5000). Local Authority / Active Sports Development Officers will help with applications. Applications could be for such things as:
Coaching and other training costs
Hockey equipment and kit (e.g. goalkeeping kit)
Coaches fees
Publicity items – design and production
All that is required with the completed application is:
Club Bank account details – account name, bank / building society name and address, sort code, account number, and details of who and how many signatories to the account.
Recent account details (i.e. previous year)
Club constitution
St Ives, March Town,
Cambridge City and the Cambridgeshire Hockey Association were aiming to catch
the December deadline / January Panel. Cambridge Ladies, Peterborough Town,
Cambridge South, Ely City, Cambridge University and St Neots have all shown
interest. Lets get some money into hockey in Cambridgeshire. Forms
have been sent to your Club Youth Contact. Or you can call for a pack on 0845
600 20 40.
NATIONAL LOTTERY HELPS CAMBRIDGESHIRE HOCKEY TO BECOME AN ACTIVE SPORT
Active Sports will bring in a total of £100 877 to hockey in Cambridgeshire over
the next 5 years. £20 278 for 2002, which must be matched with a £5 052
local contribution (known as Partnership Funding). This needs each year to be a
minimum of 20% of the total programme costs. In 2002 the CHA is putting in
£4000, the rest coming from Local Authority partners. But the CHA is asking
Clubs for a contribution to this amount because we are raiding almost the whole
of the reserves for it.
The planned programme for 2002 includes:
15 Club Satellite Centres (to support links with Clubs)
Heart of the East Youth Games (U12 Girls & Boys competitions on 14th July 2002 in Peterborough)
Three U14 schools competitions
Coach to go into at least 2 Schools (to encourage links with Saffron Walden HC – not included with Club Satellite Centres)
Umpire Coach into at least 6 Fenland and Peterborough Schools
Eight Clubs supported in Year One – March Town, St Ives, St Neots, Cambridge City, Royston, Saffron Walden, Peterborough, Ely
Stix Awards and Hockey Rules OK! Packs for every Club
U13 Boys and Girls Assessments at two sites (N & S) in the County
U13 Player Development Centre leading to an Active Sports Talent Camp at the University of East Anglia in June 2002
A Level One Coach Award course and three Coaching Updates
Umpires briefing for those developing young umpires
And numerous other generic courses available to hockey
And probably most importantly a part-time Hockey Development Officer (Activator) to support the whole programme (and hopefully in due course this post becoming full-time).
There will numerous opportunities for Coaches, but they will need to be qualified and insured as a minimum.
The sort of support available to Clubs will consist of:
A chance to join a national sports development programme
Help with development planning
Links with partners (Local Authority Sports Development Officers)
Guidance for organisation and development of the club through training and courses
Opportunity to generate interest from young people through Club Satellite Centres and Schools Competitions
Work towards the ‘Safe, Effective and Child Friendly’ criteria which is a new national standard for sports clubs, and will become a prerequisite if Local Authorities / Schools are to promote Clubs to young people.
The Active Sports activity starting after Christmas would give Under-13 Boys and Girls (age qualification date 1st September!) a good programme of activity. This would include improved assessment processes using the Hockey Stix Awards and player development coaching leading to the Active Sports Talent Camp at the University of East Anglia 21st – 23rd June 2002.
Local Authorities in
Cambridgeshire are also looking for Managers and Coaches for their Heart of the
East Youth Games teams, and young people for these roles and as Officials are to
be actively sought.

The team was coached jointly by teenagers Alex FITTER and Sean GILMOUR, already
putting something back into the game. They had both successfully completed their
Hockey Coach Level One Award Assessments at a training session the previous week
and took the team, under the watchful eye of manager Mike FITTER.
The team was: Jason JAKES and John MARJASON STAMP [St Ives HC], Richard WEST, Scott DAVIDSON, Scott WELCHER [March Town], Tom DIPPLE, Ciaran DANIELIS [St Faiths], Will DENNY [Perse Scott], Alex BOXALL [Peterborough Town], Joshua COOTE, James FANGER [Saffron Walden] and Ben SIMMONDS, Scott GILMOUR, Christy BROOKES, James COE [Cambridge City].

and training sessions on Sundays 20th January and 10th February 2002 at the St
Ivo Outdoor Centre from 11.00am to 2.00pm with some friendly matches to also be
arranged [for further information contact Mike FITTER 01480 466810]. This will
lead to the East Under-13 Inter-County Competition. Alongside this will run
the Active Sports Stages 3 & 4 Player Assessment and Development Centres, leading
to the Active Sports Talent Camp at the University of East Anglia in June [for
further information contact Simon FAIRHALL 01353 616378]. All of which will all
seek to give talented young hockey players in the County a solid base from which
they can develop.

ENGLISH HOCKEY NATIONAL U15 GIRLS PLATE COMPETITION
Cambridge City U15 Girls team have won through to the National U15 Girls
Plate Final to be held at the National Stadium, Milton Keynes on Saturday 18 May
2002. City met Henley Hockey Club in the semi-final on 21 April and produced yet
another outstanding display of teamwork, scoring 4 very good goals to win 4-1.
City imposed their superiority right from the start, having several short corners in succession, which they were unable to convert. However, 10 minutes later, Louise Clarke's fierce strike from a penalty corner broke the deadlock. City continued to pile on pressure and found the net again with another excellent goal from Madeleine Williams. Henley came back strongly in the second half but City's sturdy defence kept them at bay. Gus McKie's skilful attacking play was justly rewarded with a fine goal and victory was sealed when McKie scored again with a spectacular deflection into the top corner from a short corner strike. In the last five minutes Henley managed to score a consolation goal but it was too late to have any dramatic effect on the result.

These Rules will go to the East AGM for approval. If you wish to restate your views please respond via the link from the East website. And ensure that you attend the East AGM. Views on other proposed East League Rule Changes are invited.
[Note from Editor: the East League Rules are not subject to
approval by the East AGM but are determined by the East League Management
Committees. The rules for 2002/3 are in draft form on the East website and
comments from Clubs are welcomed, as they will be at the League General Meeting
to be held in June. Having listened to what clubs have to say the League
Management Committees will set out the final version of the rules in time for
the new season. As shown on the East website, a number of changes have
already been made in response to comments. The rule on provision of
umpires has the support of both League Management Committees, The East Region
Umpires Association, most County Umpires Associations, and the East Region

CAMBRIDGESHIRE HOCKEY ANNUAL MEETINGS
If you think activities will just continue to be organised think again! We urgently need for next season:
· Someone to coordinate Girls Schools competitions and someone for Boys Clubs and Schools competitions
· Coaches and Managers for County Teams
· Two people to represent the interests of the Schools in the County on the CHA
Management Group
- And other positions.
Nobody to run things; sorry they will just not happen. And that's not the fault of those people who do put themselves forward to take on other roles.
-
